Noise & Capitalism’ is a collection of essays by various musicians, academics, activists which reflects on the artist-audience binary, specifically how “noise,” “improvised” or “free” music offers resistance and tensions that may, at worst, provide instruments for capitalism but also, at best, point to modes of ‘subjectlessness’. BIG CITY ORCHESTRA
avant jazz / musique concrete / ambient music / avant-garde / electroacoustic / field recordings / sound art / experimental / anti records / collage art / noise / nonmusic / abstract surrealism / fluxus / drone music
PUBLISHED RELEASES__________________________________________ Big City Orchestra is a long running art/anti-art group based generally in California . They have an ever rotating cast of musician and nonmusician members. One of the most idiosyncratic and original groups of the past two decades, BCO is not your standard Orchestra. Situated in the greater San Francisco Bay Area, the band has released an enormous catalog of recorded material over the past two decades. Formed in the late 1970's the ensemble continues to maintain a free-flowing roster of artists from around the world that collaborate on specific projects. Categorizing the Orchestra into any given genre can be a task, as releases continue to surprise even the most devout listener. There is never any way to precisely classify the next BCO release. An album of authentic sea-shanties? A wall of noise? A shimmering downpour of lullabies whispered to the wind? A humorous or thought-provoking album of Sound Collages? Vocal excursions set to make Rod McKuen blush? We press play, leaning forward with slight apprehension. We await the first wave of blissful deception. We are perpetually rewarded. http://www.ubuibi.org/ USA request info >> |

CLAUSTHOME
musique concrete / radionoise / abstractism / ambient music / electroacoustic
PUBLISHED RELEASES__________________________________________ Clausthome is a group of musicians and artists based in Riga who aims to analyse several new directions of the music subculture, while experimenting and participating in the field. Clausthome is mainly working with 'electronic space-dark ambient' and 'techno-noize' or 'drum&noize' that is based on 'tribal' style synthesis. They use radio (ether) structure, data gathered by radio telescopes and archives of universe research data servers. This information, processed through sound alteration programs is used as the starting point of and base for future materials, when in live performances through mixing and synthesizing they create sound environment. The name 'Clausthome' describes as an open experimentation phase, where these authentic audio samples are used without specific processing, and without making any references to the source they come from. It is a process of translation and transformation that leads towards awareness of that potential environment, which can be created using the gathered material. 'Claustrum' is the label, which refers to this final stage - when the musicians have formulated the material and created their original music. It is a sort of synthesis of this longer period of processing, when the musicians have formed and created all samples by themselves. http://www.stepe.net/claustrum/ http://www.kunstradio.at/SPECIAL/XR http://acoustic.space.re-lab.net/lab/ Italy request info >> |

DALOT | MARIA PAPADOMANOLAKI
abstractism / minimalism / avant-garde / electroacoustic / sound art / experimental
PUBLISHED RELEASES__________________________________________ Maria Papadomanolaki is a Greek sound artist, curator and author, currently based in New York City. She works within the fields of experimental and electro-acoustic composition, including sound design for dance and video, field recording, telematic performance, installation and radio art. Papadomanolaki aims to establish a refined relationship with space, memory and identity through the many different manifestations of sound as a source material, a carrier of a dense network of information, an aesthetic intervention, a physical or ethereal trigger and a form of detritus or novelty and re-evaluation, just to name a few primary ones. Her work is also characterized by the notions of participatory understanding and exploration of shared experiences and surrounding environments, as well as the sonification of textural and material peculiarities such as the hidden life of surfaces and urban architectural structures. In the past, she has worked extensively on text-based soundpieces and on the idea of expanding a written text in space through the use of interactive music software; a field that she often revisits. Her collaboration with the NY State-based non-profit arts organization free103point9, has led her to a series of important realizations about the shape and nature of radio and transmission as platforms of artistic expression and experimentation; a line of thought rooted back in 2008 while pursuing her studies in sound art and working as a volunteer sound engineer for a community arts radio station (Resonance FM) in London. Her work has been exhibited and featured internationally at a variety of galleries, institutions and events, such as the 7000IS International Experimental Short Film Festival (Iceland, 2007), the Sunrise Festival (Sommerset, UK, 2007), the Athens Video Art Festival (Athens, GR, 2008), the IMT Gallery (London, UK, 2008), the National Review of Live Art (Glasgow, UK, 2009), the Ontological-Hysteric Theatre at St. Mark’s Church (New York, USA, 2009), Cabinet Magazine’s Gallery Space (New York, USA, 2010), Flushnik Studios (New York, 2010), the DHRA Conference (London, UK, 2010), the Center of Mediterranean Architecture/K.A.M. (Chania, Greece, 2010), the Niu Arts Space (Barcelona, Spain, 2011), the SKUC Gallery (Ljubljana, Slovenia, 2011) among others. She has produced experimental radio pieces and exhibits, as well as standard-form radioshows which have been featured in a variety of radio stations such as Resonance FM (London, UK), WGXC (Acra, NY), Radio Campus Paris (France), Sound Art Radio (UK), Radio One 91FM (Dunedin, New Zealand), CFRO Vancouver Co-operative Radio (Canada) and Cooradio (Thessaloniki, GR). As a researcher and writer, she has produced work that has been published and presented at international conferences. Her paper “Radio as the voice of community, locality, interactivity and experimentation”, presented at the ECREA Radio Research Section 2009 conference, has been published in the volume ”Radio Content in the Digital Age: The Evolution of a Sound Medium” (Intellect Books, 2011). She is also the co-author of the book “Transmission Arts: Artists and Airwaves” (PAJ Publications, 2011). She has received awards and fellowships by the Nagoya University of the Arts (2007), the Schilizzi Foundation (2007) and the Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation (2008). PUBLISHED RELEASES__________________________________________ Daniel Jansson. Deadwood is a one man project that was created in 2003 under the name Deadwood Murder, its only purpose was/is to satisfy my lust for raw and filthy black industrial music. It has been a slow process with the re-making of several songs and no vocals recorded until summer 2004. A demo was made and sent out to several labels, the response was excellent. That same summer a split tape with black metal band blodulv called The Havoc We Seek was released on the French BM label Forgotten Wisdom productions. And a few weeks later Cold Spring records agreed to release the first full length deadwood album named "8 19". http://www.deadwood.se/ Sweden request info >> |

PUBLISHED RELEASES__________________________________________ Drakh started his musical career back in 1995 when the classical Swedish industrial outfit Machinenzimmer 412 was reformed as MZ.412 and the concept of true black industrial created. During his musical journey he has explored several different ways of musical expressions and constantly changing boundaries and challenge clichés within the scene. This has e.g. resulted in releases like Symmetrical Sodomy (as Sublime Musing), The third power of Alfta (as Al-Wahaar Dhin) and Psychoacoustics (as L/A/B together with Henrik N Björk and Petri Laukka). In 2001 he teamed up with scientist/artist K.Meizter and started the duo Beyond Sensory Experience who instantly set out to explore and change the musical universe of dark ambient. PUBLISHED RELEASES__________________________________________
Francisco López is internationally recognized as one of the major figures of the sound art and experimental music scene. Over the past 30 years he has developed an astonishing sonic universe, absolutely personal and iconoclastic, based on a profound listening of the world. Destroying boundaries between industrial sounds and wilderness sound environments, shifting with passion from the limits of perception to the most dreadful abyss of sonic power, proposing a blind, profound and transcendental listening, freed from the imperatives of knowledge and open to sensory and spiritual expansion. Over the last twenty years Francisco López has been developing a powerful and consistent world of minimal electroacoustic soundscapes, 'trying to reach an ideal of absolute concrète music'. To date, his catalog comprises more than 140 sound works, which have been released by one hundred record labels from Spain, France, Italy, Germany, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Poland, Austria, UK, Norway, Greece, Russia, Canada, USA, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Argentina, Japan, China, Australia. He has toured extensively throughout Western and Eastern Europe, North, Central and South America, Japan and Australia doing acousmatic performances, and he has received commissions from a number of reknown institutions and organizations, such as the Dutch and Spanish National Radios, the Goethe Institut, V2 Organization (Rotterdam), Yale University Theater (New Haven), the Ralph Lemon Company (New York), the Zeitkratzer Ensemble (Berlin), Creative Time (New York), Quartier Ephemere (Montreal) and Sound Traffic Control (San Francisco). http://www.franciscolopez.net http://www.discogs.com/artist/Francisco+L%C3%B3pez e-mail: info@franciscolopez.net Spain request info >> |

PUBLISHED RELEASES__________________________________________ Gianluca Becuzzi (born 1962, Piombino-Italy) is an electronic / electroacoustic composer and sound artist active since the first half of the 80’s. He released many albums and performed live around Europe during the last three decades under various names. Since 1999, his artistic production is characterised by a strong experimental imprint, by the interest into the expressive possibilities offered by the technologies and by a clear aesthetic inclination towards abstract forms and micro / macro noises / sounds. He deals with electronic / electroacoustic composition, sound art, audio installations, ambient post-scorings and sound design. The relationships between art and science, between audio and visual-spatial forms, as well as between composition and self-generative processes represent the main themes in my sonological research. Among the artistic productions of the latest years, in addiction to the experimental works under his own name, we have to mention also his solo works as Kinetix, the records in duet with Fabio Orsi, the electro-post-punk project Noise Trade Company and the harsh-power-noise productions as Greyhistory, plus several other collaborations with musicians, theatre companies and videoartists from the experimental area. GX JUPITTER-LARSEN
performative art / abstractism / noise / conceptual art
PUBLISHED RELEASES__________________________________________ Gerard X Jupitter-Larsen (sometimes erroneously spelled Juppiter-Larsen) is an artist, based in Hollywood, California, who has been active in a number of underground art scenes since the late 1970s. He has been involved in punk rock, mail art, cassette culture, the noise music scene, and zine culture. During the 1990s he was the sound designer for the performances of Mark Pauline's Survival Research Laboratories. His best known work is as the founder of the noise act The Haters, who have performed all over the world, and appear on over 300 CD & record releases. Underlying all of Jupitter-Larsen's work is a peculiar mix of aesthetic and conceptual obsessions, particularly entropy and decay, professional wrestling, and a self-created lexicon consisting mainly of personalized units of measurement such as polywave, the totimorphous, and the xylowave. Jupitter-Larsen is also a filmmaker and video artist. From 1982 to 1986, he submitted a black video tape entitled Blank Banner to over forty video festivals. It was screened in nine. In 2008, GX Jupitter-Larsen set up a theme label called Zelphabet. He is compiling and releasing a series of 26 CD compilations featuring the likes of Asmus Tietchens, 16 Bitch Pile-Up, Chop Shop, Contagious Orgasm, Dave Phillips, Francisco Lopez, Giancarlo Toniutti, The Hanatarash, Incapacitants, K2, KK Null, The Legendary Pink Dots, Nocturnal Emissions, Sudden Infant, Thomas Dimuzio, Wolf Eyes, Yellow Swans, and Zbigniew Karkowski. avant jazz / grind / musique concrete / psychedelic / abstractism / avant-garde / electroacoustic / experimental / noise
PUBLISHED RELEASES__________________________________________ Ives#1 is a project founded in 2007 by Michael Wertmuller (Alboth, Peter Brotzmann Trio) - vox Marino Piaklas (Steamboat Switzerland, Peter Brotzmann Trio) - bass Thomas Mahmoud (ex Von Spar, Oliver Twist Conspiracy) - drums Gerd Rische - electronics In the early 90s, Swiss drummer Michael Wertmuller and his band Alboth! (that was occasionally produced by Kevin Martin of God, Techno Animal, The Bug) made a benchmark exploration of new terrain somewhere between Metal, Free Jazz and Noise. In the meantime the classically trained multi-instrumentalist plays in Free Jazz trumpeter Peter Brotzmann’s Trio and is a much sought after composer, whose works are performed at major New Music festivals. Amongst other things he’s collaborated with Wolfgang Hilbig and composed pieces for the legendary Peter Brotzmann Chicago 10tet and for bassist Marino Piaklas’ formation, Steamboat Switzerland. Thomas Mahmoud used to be lead vocalist with the Cologne band, Von Spar, with whom he created a surprising, innovative amalgam of Post-Rock, Indiepop and Prog-Rock before leaving the band after its second album. Mahmoud’s primary interest since launching his solo project, Softgod has been electronic and electro-acoustic music. During a joint artists-in-residency sojourn at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts, Wertmüller and Piaklas met Gerd Rische, a musician and director of the Academy’s electronic studio. After Wertmüller had participated, at Thomas Mahmoud’s invitation, in the latter’s adaptation of an old Dada screenplay, "Der Pleitejazz" by Paul van Ostaijen, he invited Mahmoud to join in rehearsals with Piaklas and Rische at the Academy. http://www.myspace.com/ivesnumberone Germany request info >> |

Joachim Montessuis develops an experimental contextual practice mainly around voice, drone, noise and resonance since the early 90′s. His current work is directed towards conceptual experimental processes of the issue of observation and perception of reality through a non-dual approach. His vocal performative work explores various states of trance through the extreme potentialities of amplification and electronic transformations of screams, throat singing, and also words. He designs his actions as processes, “noise poetry-codes reality fertilizers”. Collaborations with very different artists including Henri Chopin, Charlemagne Palestine, Phill Niblock, Maja S. K. JOHN BLADES
spoken word / musique concrete / psychedelic / avant-garde / electroacoustic / sound art / experimental / abstract surrealism / fluxus
PUBLISHED RELEASES__________________________________________ John Blades is the founder member of the group THE LOOP ORCHESTRA. 02 Dicember 011 The Australian experimental music community lost one of its finest last Friday when John Blades passed away due to complications associated with cancer. John was best known as a founding member of The Loop Orchestra, the long-time host/producer of the Background Noise radio program , and a tireless supporter of experimental musicians and sound artists around the country. Outside of music, John advocated for people with disabilities (he was diagnosed with MS in 1982) in many ways, most memorably in his Walkley Award-winning radio documentary “The Too Hard Basket” about sexuality and the disabled. John was one of the rare people I’ve met who I know pretty soon that I am privileged to have crossed paths with. His severe disability could not conceal his keen intelligence and broad knowledge of the arts, his humour, and most of all a positive energy and enthusiasm that he brought to his work. Listen to his fantastic radio doco “The Too Hard Basket” and you’ll get an idea of what I mean. If anyone in this world had something to be down and self-pitying about, it was John, who struggled for years with MS, only to finally succumb to cancer. His last email of a few weeks ago, informing his friends of his grim prognosis, agreed with what we all thought – ‘it wasn’t fair’. Yet he was still warm and positive, holding out hope for a final experimental treatment. We come across so many negative, self-pitying people – none of them have had the trials John did, and yet he was one of the most positive, enthusiastic people I’ve ever known (even though he had had episodes with depression the past; very common for people with MS). His personal and professional support for my own work was significant and lifted my spirits on several occasions. I saw reports of John’s passing in social media on the weekend, but didn’t want to post anything here until I had something more official. Rik Rue rang me last night and asked that I inform Melbourne people who knew John, and pass on the details of the funeral service (Monday 5 December at Northern Suburbs Crematorium, Sydney). Even if we can’t attend, I’m sure those of us who knew John and/or were moved by his work, will spare a thought for him. Pietro Riparbelli is a philosopher, composer and sound-multimedia artist. Co-curator and executive producer of the meta-curatorial practice platform "Metasound", spin-off of the publisher Radical Matters - Editions / Label directed by SG, to investigate the dimension between music and contemporary art: http://www.radicalmatters.com/metasound Artist Statement: My work arises from the study of the Phenomenology of perception with particular reference to the dichotomy between Visible/Invisible strictly connected with the studies about the concept of sound landscape. About the environmental works I usually make a deep investigation of particular places, making recordings like field recordings or recordings of signals from short wave radio receivers and VLF receivers, in order to compose conceptual works about the selected sites; together with a deep study about the history of the place on which I’m working on. I’m interested in reconfiguring the sound panorama through its transcendental aspects to create a dimension that is not only sound but mainly a total perceptive dimension that bring ourselves to find out a new kind of perception. I realize works as PIETRO RIPARBELLI especially related to the world of Contemporary Art. So each work arise from a conceptual idea turned into sound. The field in which I principally work is linked to the perception of the sound landscape and to the perception of inner states of consciousness related to other dimensions of awareness. K11 is a project that deals with the world of radio signals, the trans-communication and other invisible phenomena, to create a dimension where the only sound sources are signals from shortwave radio receivers and field recordings taken from very specific locations. In this project I use only sounds coming from the atmosphere and from invisible places turned into fields of drone with particular interest into the study of the dynamics of Noise. http://www.pt-r.com/ http://www.discogs.com/artist/Pietro+Riparbelli Italy request info >> |

Thus, all the lyrics of kaula project are taken from an old an important text of the Shivaitic Tantrism called AVADHUTA GITA. The Avadhuta Gita is a text of Vedanta representing extreme Advaita or Nondualism. It is ascribed to Dattatreya, who is looked upon as an Incarnation of God. Avadhuta means a liberated soul, one who has "passed away from" or "shaken off" all worldly attachments and cares and has attained a spiritual state equivalent to the existence of God. Though avadhuta naturally implies renunciation, it includes an additional and yet higher state which is neither attachment nor detachment but beyond both. An avadhuta feels no need of observing any rules, either secular or religious. He seeks nothing, avoids nothing. He has neither knowledge nor ignorance. Having realized that he is the infinite Self, he lives in that vivid realization. http://www.myspace.com/kaula7 request info >> |

The artistic production of KINETIX is characterised by a strong experimental imprint, by the interest into the expressive possibilities offered by the digital technologies and by a clear aesthetic inclination towards minimalist forms and micro noises/sounds. KINETIX deals with electronic / electroacoustic composition, sound art, audio installations, ambient post-scorings and sound design. Portland, Oregon's L'ACEPHALE's sound draws on influences including neo-folk band Death in June and the Ukraine's Hate Forest, both of whom are allegedly "Ripped on Fascist Ideas". Add to that choral passages appropriated from Orthodox Christian composers like Gorecki and Arvo Part, and you can see why they are a more intriguing proposition than the ideologically confused caustic mush that passes for much modern Black Metal. PUBLISHED RELEASES__________________________________________ Vittore Baroni is an Italian journalist who was among the first to write about industrial music and the new experimental frontiers. He recorded some experiments on his own which appeared on different compilations, then towards the end of the 80s' he founded the odd experimental band Le Forbici Di Manitù. 'Lieutenant Murnau' was a pioneering musical project from Vittore Baroni (Italy) operating in the field of "plagiarism", known in Italy as an obscure act it became a cult afterwards. When he first got involved in Mail-Art around 1977, artists like Genesis P. Orridge (1), Richard H. Kirk (2), Monte Cazazza (3) and Nigel Ayers (4) were among Baroni's early contacts. He began to be involved in what at that time was called the "tape network", with his own audio experiments. After a few years of experiments in sound-poetry he began with his project 'Lieutenant Murnau' in 1980. His experiments as 'Lieutenant Murnau' were much more ironical then the industrial music which had at that time its evolution since the mid seventies. It was a little step beyond industrial, Baroni was mostly interested in that area of audio collage which in a few years took the name of "plunderphonics" or "plagiarism". He did not want to play a single note or instrument but to recycle and transform the record releases of other musicians to create new sounds. His sleeping room was his studio where he created his music with the help of only a few tape decks, old record players, prepared vinyl records, tape loops made on a old Geloso reel-to-reel tape recorder, some toy instruments, … he created his music. http://www.sztuka-fabryka.be/encyclopaedia/items/lieutenant_murnau.htm Italy request info >> |

LIMBO
ambient music / electroacoustic / sound art / experimental / abstract surrealism / ritual dark ambient / industrial music / drone music
PUBLISHED RELEASES__________________________________________ LIMBO was an influential eclectic music project created in January 1984 by the Tuscan artist Gianluca Becuzzi - still one of the most important personalities on the Italian electronic / electro-acoustic and experimental scenes. Since 1984 LIMBO has released twelve full length and four mini-albums. They also appeared on various compilations and performed live many times in Italy, Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Over the years, LIMBO frequently changed record labels, line-ups and musical styles, but always maintained strong dark and electronic elements. Characteristic of the band’s whole artistic approach was its exploration of rhythm / timbre, as well as the highly dramatic mood created by both the sound and the themes examined (i.e. technology and mysticism, science and neo-primitivism, thanatology and extreme erotic practices). The aesthetic quality, its conceptual and formal coherence and the continuity of its developed languages, all helped to create the “cult” status that still surrounds the name LIMBO on the international underground circuit. In September 2006 the re-born Spittle Records (the Tuscan label which originally released the debut mini-LP "IN LIMBO" back in 1986) asked the disbanded LIMBO if they could release all the band’s early material, including its first demo-tape, its first mini-LP and a small collection of tracks that have resurfaced from within the label’s vaults. Spittle's inquiry results in "Early Works (1984-1987)", a double-CD including a digitally re-mastered and polished version of the the whole musical production of LIMBO in its early years. http://www.crepuscle.com/limbo/ http://www.discogs.com/artist/Limbo Italy request info >> |

MARCELLO BACCI - GRUPPO PSICOFONICO DI GROSSETOPUBLISHED RELEASES__________________________________________
[...] After more than thirty-five years of dedicated study of Instrumental TransCommunication (ITC), Marcello Bacci can be considered a leading expert in the field due to this exceptionally long record of experimentation with the voices. The remarkable phenomena that have occurred in the past decades in Grosseto, Italy, indicate that this persevering experimenter is always prepared to locate new openings to communicate with the beyond. Bacci’s character is such that he is never satisfied with the results achieved and always wishes to continue the exploration from other possible perspectives. His interest in the paranormal goes back to 1949 when he participated in a mediumistic sitting in London. From that time, his life was indelibly marked and today, at seventy-nine years of age, he continues to make regular experiments, once a month. Bacci is a man with wide-ranging creativity. His personality reveals itself to be unconditioned and free, intolerant of any restriction coming from dogmatic and cultural pressures that seek to reject realities that personal experience has indicated to him are possible. In his long years of experimental work, Bacci has tested various methods and many technical devices. In the beginning he made microphone recordings, in the same manner as Jürgenson and Raudive. Over the years he has made many other attempts with newly developed devices. In the past two decades he has been obtaining his transcontacts through an old Nordmende valve radio....[continue here] PUBBLICAZIONI IL MISTERO DELLE VOCI DALL'ALDILA' - Marcello Bacci - Edizioni Mediterranee,1985 TERRE TUTTORA INVIOLATE - Luciano Capitani - Silvana Pagnotta - Edizioni Mediterranee,1990

- Friedrich Jurgenson http://www.marcellobacci.it Italy request info >> |

MAURIZIO BIANCHI / M.B.
death ambient / abstractism / ambient music / minimalism / electroacoustic / experimental / noise / nonmusic / harsh / industrial music
PUBLISHED RELEASES__________________________________________ Maurizio Bianchi (December 4, 1955 in Pomponesco in the Province of Mantua) is an Italian pioneer of noise music, originating from Milan. Bianchi began to produce music in 1979, and since 1980 has used electronic equipment with the avowed goal "to produce technological sounds and in such a way to work on complete realising of the modern decadence". In the beginning, he published tapes under the alias Sacher-Pelz. In 1981, William Bennett, head of the band Whitehouse and the British Come Org. label, offered Bianchi a record contract, which Bianchi signed unchecked. It was based on a "joke contract" that Steven Stapleton of Nurse With Wound had sketched. The contract assumed all rights to Bianchi's work. After delivery of the tapes Bennett edited-in speeches by Nazi leaders, and instead of the relatively unsensational name MB, it was published under the alias Leibstandarte SS MB, named after the SS unit that worked as bodyguards to Adolf Hitler. Bianchi became religious and withdrew from the music business. Much of his work is sought today by collectors, especially as they appeared in extremely small editions. In 1998, encouraged by Alga Marghen label head Emanuele Carcano, who offered him a label of his own, Maurizio Bianchi started again to make music. The label is EEs'T Records, through which he released new editions of all old MB albums, as well as many new releases. Therefore, since 1997, he was back on the underground scene, working on several projects both in solo or in collaboration with other Italian artists (Giuseppe Verticchio/NIMH, Arnaldo Pontis and Corrado Altieri/TH26, Davide Femia/MDT, Saverio Evangelista, Matteo "Hue" Uggeri/Sparkle in Grey, Emanuela De Angelis and Eugenio Maggi/Crìa Cuervos) and international (Klaus e Danijela Jochim/Telepherique, Sandro Kaiser/Frequency In Cycles Per Second, Akifumi Nakajima/Aube, David van Ravesteijn/Land Use, Siegmar Fricke, Nobu Kasahara e Hitoshi Kojo, Maor Appelbaum, Jozef Van Wissem, Craig Hilton, Philip Julian/Cheapmachines). http://www.myspace.com/mauriziobianchi http://www.theesonicabyss.com/maurizio_bianchi.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maurizio_Bianchi Italy request info >> |

MELEK-THA
abstractism / experimental / dark ambient / harsh / martial noise / industrial music
PUBLISHED RELEASES__________________________________________ Melek-Tha was formed during Summer '94 by Lord Evil who wanted to play music he really felt by using experimental material and special samplers. After a few months, one advance album was out and spread through mail to friends. Adipocere Records, the French Metal label, heard this Oppressant Dark Ritual Opus I and decided to release this CD. Astrum Argentinum is the title of this first opus... In the following years, Melek-Tha remained very silent and didn't release anything at all. In fact, Lord Evil had already two other albums ready but was looking for a new label. Indeed, being signed to a Metal label was not the best thing... It was revealed in 1998 that Cold Spring Records, home of such acts as Archon Satani, Sutcliffe Jugend, Merzbow and Psychic TV, was to release the next album. In April 1999, the second opus: De Magia Natvrali Daemoniaca, Diabolus Ritual Opus II, finally saw the light on Cold Spring Records. In 1999, Solipsism Records (US) put out Post Nuclear Race on CD-R. Limited to 100 copies, this release unveiled the very bleak side of Melek-Tha, quite different from the more "mainstream" releases. MOVIMENTO AVANGUARDIA ERMETICO
esoteric / black metal / abstract symbolism / weird black metal / avant-garde
PUBLISHED RELEASES__________________________________________ Movimento d'Avanguardia Ermetico are: Yog : Vocals & Drums Ans : Guitars Formed in 2005 "Movimento d'Avanguardia Ermetico" is a raw and introspective black metal band. The current line-up is composed by Yog (vocals, bass and drums) and Ans (guitars). MZ.412
doom / black metal / abstract symbolism / suprematism / acousmatic / weird black metal / electroacoustic / experimental / noise / dark ambient / ritual dark ambient / drone music
PUBLISHED RELEASES__________________________________________ Maschinenzimmer 412 (currently known as Mz.412) are the inventors of the so called "black industrial", a dark and haunting music which mixes industrial noise, ritual ambient and black metal atmospheres. The mastermind behind the project is Henrik "Nordvargr" Björkk (often credited as Kremator), aided by different people with each release. Original releases from 1989-1990 came under the name Maschinenzimmer 412, eventually Björkk founded the Swedish EBM band Pouppée Fabrikk (see relative Discogs entry). The project came back in 1995 with the shortened moniker Mz.412 and a typical black metal look (painted faces, long hair, black leather), which was later abandoned. Here is one of the truly classic CMI acts, that already in 1989 released the "Malfeitor" LP. After a four year hiatus the band formerly known as Maschinenzimmer 412 were once again blowing the battle horns in 1995, and returned with a timelessly blasphemous musical statement, the "In Nomine Dei Nostri Satanas Luciferi Excelsi" album. By that time the restructured and revitalized MZ. 412 had chosen to cruise down the left handed path, a fact that has ever permeated their output: in album titles, cover art, and not least in the songs themselves, recorded as they are during rituals. By pushing the influences from satanic rites and black metal music to the limit, it resulted in "Burning the temple of god", the ultimate crossover between dark ambience and the metal genre. This is True Swedish Black Industrial, and these guys aren´t kidding; this is music to either conjure or exorcise your demons to. - Mårten Sahlén - http://www.geocities.com/Vienna/2079/ Sweden request info >> |

NOCTURNAL EMISSIONS | NIGEL AYERS
psychedelic / abstractism / ambient music / avant-garde / experimental / noise / industrial music
PUBLISHED RELEASES__________________________________________ The project was initiated in London in or around 1980 by Nigel Ayers (b. 1957) together with collaborators Danny Ayers(b.1964) and Caroline K (b.1957- d.2008). From early in their work, the group concentrated on the axiom of music being a form of social control, and highlighted concepts such as information overload, cult conditioning, brainwashing and subliminal advertising, in a critique of information society. Their music drew heavily on worldwide folk traditions as well as that of the European avant-garde. One of their earliest performances was in a railway arch in Atlantic Road, Brixton, while the 1981 Brixton riots raged outside. Since 1984 Nocturnal Emissions has continued mainly as Nigel Ayers' solo project. Line-up has varied from one to a dozen musicians. Nocturnal Emissions temporary members have included net artist Stanza, Ben Ponton of Zoviet France and (somewhat bizarrely) life coach Fiona Harrold. Nocturnal Emissions is a sound art project that has released numerous records and CDs in music styles ranging from electro-acoustic, musique concrète, hybridised beats, sound collage, post-industrial music, ambient and noise music. The sound art has been part of an ongoing multimedia campaign of guerrilla sign ontology utilising video art, film, hypertext and other documents. Nocturnal Emissions were later to be associated with the Kernow section of the Association of Autonomous Astronauts and to feature in a best-selling story by the novelist Stewart Home. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nigel_Ayers http://www.earthlydelights.co.uk http://nigelayers.com/ http://nigelayers.blogspot.com/ United Kingdom request info >> |

PANICSVILLE
avant-garde / electroacoustic / noise / surrealism
PUBLISHED RELEASES__________________________________________ Panicsville is a Chicago noise music group founded in 1992 by Andy Ortmann (founder of Nihilist Records) with David Forquer and Ryan Kohler. It has become an ongoing project for Ortmann to work with other musicians. Early shows consisted of pelting the audience with items like dry ice, meat, blood and insects. Now the group generally plays shrieking, high-pitched noises dressed in strange black latex outfits, and physically attack their audience in a violent but playful fashion. At one time, the group consisted of 15 members -- Ben Armstrong and Drew St. Ivany from Laddio Bolocko and The Psychic Paramount among them; however, Jeremy Fisher and Andy Ortmann are the only two permanent members of the group. Recent collaborators include filmmaker Usama Alshaibi, Cock E.S.P., M.V. Carbon from Metalux and Thymme Jones from Cheer Accident. With an ever evolving rotating cast of personnel, Andy Ortmann currently makeup Panicsville with various personel. The sound is comprised of, but not limited to electronic, noise, accoustic, experimental, power electronics, etc. Live shows prove to exceed audience expectations for sonic violence as well as physical. PER AHLUND
musique concrete / sound installation / esoteric / abstractism / ambient music / abstract symbolism / minimalism / avant-garde / electroacoustic / sound art / experimental / noise / dark ambient / abstract expressionism / ritual dark ambient / industrial music / drone music
Per Ahlund, born 1976, resides in Stockholm, Sweden where he’s involved in several experimental music-, improvisation- and sound art-projects. His live soundscapes blur the boundaries between noise and music, stillness and hysteria, darkness and light. He create compositions on the verge of dissolving and focuses on mood and texture rather than tonality and rhythm. He performs live on a regular basis and has the last few years toured with acts like Amber Asylum, ?Alos, b°tong and Origami Galaktika. He has released several full length albums containing abstract, dark soundscapes with such projects as Diskrepant, Skare and Aum Arrhythmia. Live he use contact microphones, gadgets, loops and effects to form abstract sound environments created in the moment. His live performances are often based on old radios, voice, newly found objects and junk used as instruments. “The soundscapes encourage you to travel, and then dissolve, in space and time. To merge with the frequencies. To have a dialogue with yourself. To finally think of nothing. To be released...” http://www.perahlund.se Sweden request info >> |

PUBLISHED RELEASES__________________________________________ PHILIPPE PETIT is interested in soundtracks; even if he creates original music he'd rather be introduced as a "musical travel agent" than a composer. PETIT uses a computer to build up electronic layers, process acoustic and field recordings. To second the machine he likes to move various glasses, or percussive objects, and take advantage of vinyl material to fondle released sounds. A journalist for various magazines and radio as well as a musical activist, PETIT has celebrated his 25th year of sharing his musical passions as the man behind the cult labels Pandemonium Rdz. and BiP_HOp. PETIT has assembled what people call a dream-team of collaborators, working with: Lydia Lunch, Foetus, Kumo, Scott McCloud (Girls Against Boys), Cosey Fanni Tutti, My Brightest Diamond, Sybarite, Pantaleimon, Graham Lewis (Wire), Barry Adamson, Scanner, Mira Calix, Kammerflimmer Kollektief, Guapo, Leafcutter John, Simon Fisher Turner, Justin Broadrick and many more... Pietro Riparbelli is a philosopher, composer and sound-multimedia artist. Curator and executive producer of the meta-curatorial practice platform "Metasound", spin-off of the publisher Radical Matters - Editions / Label directed by SG, to investigate the dimension between music and contemporary art: http://www.radicalmatters.com/metasound Artist Statement: My work arises from the study of the Phenomenology of perception with particular reference to the dichotomy between Visible/Invisible strictly connected with the studies about the concept of sound landscape. With PT-R project I want to investigate the way to create rhythmic sound landscapes making the use of environmental sounds (field recordings) with particular reference to the world of electronic scene. The method I utilize within PT-R project is based on sampling of environmental sound sources turned into rhythmic framework. http://www.radicalmatters.com/metasound http://www.discogs.com/artist/Pietro+Riparbelli http://www.pt-r.com/ http://pietroriparbelli.bandcamp.com Italy request info >> |

ROD SUMMERS

PUBLISHED RELEASES__________________________________________ Rod Summers (born 1943), born in Dorset, England, is a sound, visual, conceptual artist, performance poet, dramatist, mail artist and book artist, publisher, archivist, and lecturer on intermedia. He is based in Maastricht, Holland. The results of Summers' multiple, art-related activities have often appeared as part of his concept of VEC (Visual, Experimental, Concrete), which he originated in 1973. In 1999 CNN International featured Summers in its Art Club show as a representative of avant-garde art in Holland. In addition, over the last 20 years, Summers has performed his work at various festivals in Europe and Iceland, including the Reykjavik Art Festival (1991), the Polypoetry Festival of Sound Poetry (Bologna, 1993), and the International Sound Poetry Festival (Bologna, 1997), among others. Summers features among the "second wave" of intermedia artists, the first wave including Dick Higgins, Vito Acconci, John Cage, Allan Kaprow, Joseph Beuys, and the Fluxus artists of the 1960s. He differs from Higgins and members of the first generation, however, in that he is less theoretical and more experiential in his approach to his art. There have been no VEC manifestos published by Summers, although one may intuit what it encompasses by examining the activities undertaken and products issued under its sign. http://www.vecworldservice.net/index.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rod_Summers USA request info >> |

ROGER ROTOR
abstractism / experimental / noise / harsh / idm
PUBLISHED RELEASES__________________________________________ Switzerland born Roger Rotor has been involved with music since the early 1980s with various music styles, even going into the realm of death metal. As his interest in other genres increased, Roger Rotor has become involved with a growing list of artists, resulting in a lengthy discography and myriad of sounds to his credit. However, it wasn't until 1997 that Roger Rotor came to work on his own. The music produced now is a far cry from the metal of before, having moved into a realm of minimalist IDM. Tracks pulsate with dense electronics and rhythmic percussion, creating a thick atmosphere of trance inducing grooves. Changes take shape gradually, beginning often with a simple sequence. Few additional sounds are introduced, and undergo a variety of manipulations resulting in a multitude of tonal shifts. This makes for tracks that are highly hypnotic, mildly harmonic, and perfect for those who like to vanish into the music on a late-night dance floor, surrounded by solid waves of sound. http://www.roger-rotor.ch/ Swisse request info >> |

SCAPEGOAT
abstract symbolism / electroacoustic / experimental / noise / dark ambient / industrial music
PUBLISHED RELEASES__________________________________________ The Goat, assisted by The BUTCHER and LORDHELL. Scapegoat began in the early 1990's. It was in a dark building in downtown Salt Lake City, during the twilight hours. Heavily inspired by Legion, Lustmord, Controlled Bleeding, Ain Soph, Zero Kama, LAShTAL and other ritual and dark ambient sounds, The Goat combines these feelings and ideals with our own unique sounds. We use electronics and acoustic instruments, and a great deal of our sounds are supplied by the ambience of the dark world around us in various locales, as well as our own voices. Our material will range from the harshest noise to lush ambient sounds. There is no god. There is no magic. There is no heaven nor is there a hell. There is only Science. There is only Logic. There is only Death. Only Space and Time are Reality. After Death, Space and Time blur and distort- and one can travel wherever- and whenever- one wishes. We have found a way to do this before death. SEVENGUITARS
avant jazz / musique concrete / performative art / sound installation / psychedelic / abstractism / ambient music / minimalism / avant-garde / sound art / experimental / noise / constructivism / site specific / drone music
PUBLISHED RELEASES__________________________________________ Francesco Fuzz Brasini Sevenguitars is a project born from the idea of interaction between sound and space. The project features seven guitars, seemingly identical but technically conceived to produce distinctive characteristics: the seven instruments have been designed and handcrafted with a tonal chamber inside the solid body which interacts with the string's harmonic vibrations creating different sound effects. Every guitar is connected to a valve-amplifier each of witch is equipped with distinctive speakers and different power. The amps are used at the maximum volume and tone. This creates a feedback effect with the guitars: the strings go in auto-oscillation creating different harmonics depending on the instrument and the tuning, and reacting with the acoustic features of the performative environment. The musician loses, therefore, the role of executor and becomes only the creator of a process open to unpredictable results and closely related to the spatial contest of the performance. Every place, every contest, becomes an important variable able to influence the result: the sound, therefore, is more linked to the spatial dimension rather than to the temporal one with which the music is traditionally associated. http://www.myspace.com/7guitars7 request info >> |

THE LOOP ORCHESTRA
avant jazz / musique concrete / performative art / abstractism / ambient music / minimalism / avant-garde / experimental
PUBLISHED RELEASES__________________________________________ Founded in 1982 by Richard Fielding and John Blades. Other members: Manny Gasparinatos, Patrick Gibson, Hamish MacKenzie, Sheriff Lindo. The genesis of The Loop Orchestra occured in the ashes of a simple two-tape-machine-no-man-band, The Nobodies, which died in a fire in 1980. From those ashes, and with a pastiche taken from the likes of Terse Tapes, home of Severed Heads, an ashen poultice was formed to take up further and more involved household heretical experimention, this time with reel-to-reel tape machines. This idea was subsequently expanded upon in the studio of Sydney radio station 2MBS-fm amid a group of experimental radio programmers. Two, John Blades and Richard Fielding, were using the studio equipment as an instrument, experimenting with tape machines through processes involving cutting, dissecting, rearranging and rejoining prerecorded tape, creating tape loops and playing them back. They felt a need to formalise their studio experimentation and so conceived the idea of creating a full blown machine orchestra whose contrived destiny it was to perform in the Sydney Opera House's hallowed Concert Hall. The intention of the Orchestra was for groups of instruments of an orthodox orchestra to be represented by reel-to-reel tape machines playing loops of the instruments' sounds. Upon the realization that this egoistical ambition was doomed a smaller ensemble comprising 4 reel-to-reel machines playing slowly evolving tape-loop constructions, made its live debut playing a live-to-air performance in the rather less graceful, but no less culturally appropriate studio of Sydney radio station 2MBS-fm in 1983, as The Loop Orchestra. TOY BIZARRE
musique concrete / sound installation / abstractism / acousmatic / minimalism / avant-garde / field recordings / sound art / experimental / noise / conceptual art / drone music
PUBLISHED RELEASES__________________________________________ "In june 1985, I decided to work under the name of Toy Bizarre, while my best friend and I were recording crickets singing in a pit along a small countryside road, in the sunset. His father's old tape recorder was in fact so bad that we were just able to hear a small frequency part of the hypnotic insects rhythm between the clouds of hiss. Back at home, I decided to go on recording, put on tape every little sound of my environment, of the sonic world I was surrounded by. I still do it. My actual work is focused on "places", its characteristics and its sound components. So the goal of all my sound compositions is to explore a place: it could be a chain of mountains, a square meter of grass, a beach, a marshalling yard, a hydroelectric powerstation... Each time the process is the same: recording all the typical sounds of the place (well, for me), then to compose sound pieces only with these sounds, through a sound sculpture process. So we can say that each one of these pieces is the sonic reflection of the place." -- Cédric Peyronnet http://www.ingeos.org/ French request info >> |

UTARM
doom / esoteric / expressionism / abstract symbolism / weird black metal / avant-garde / noise / ritual dark ambient / drone music
PUBLISHED RELEASES__________________________________________ s.f.skancke. live rituals: s.f.skancke, s.o.toft Utarm was a project that has been dwelling for years, without finding its right form. Various black metal and ambient bands..projects was tried out through the nineties, but the constallations of people never worked, and it was clear that a oneman project was the only solution. Human relations seems to be a constant failure.in the early years of the new millenium the beast found its ugly shape. Not wanting to make the classic Black Metal, neither Noise or Doom, but creating true satanic desperation not bound by musical structures. Through Utarm the darker shadows of humanity can be found, a mirror to reflect the black holes and misery of oneself. Humans tend to avoid this side of their personality, therfore most humans does not have the caracteristics of a whole person, just shallow creatures who use their time to try and forget their unavoidable death. When confronted with utarm this is not longer possible. Total darkness concentrated to audial spikes of hate, and these spikes will penetrate you..... http://www.myspace.com/utarm http://www.utarm.net/ Norwey request info >> |

VRI-IL
avant jazz / psychedelic / ambient music / electroacoustic / experimental / noise / surrealism / drone music
PUBLISHED RELEASES__________________________________________ V-Zent:Vincent Gambino - vox, clarino tapes, plates metallofoni. Kiwy:Matteo Cucini keyboards, sampler, percussions. Aljaz:Francesco Cavaliere - vox, guitar, bass, tapes, discophono. Vril or Vri-il referes also to a non defined form of mystical energy often linked to Orgone energy as described by Wilheilm Reich. The bands intuitions have lead them to believe that life is but a long oniric experience modified by the will of the dreamer. Vri-ils live performance tends to create an hypnagogic environment in which one can lose touch with his conscious self and reach different states of creativity. This is achived through hypnotic rythms, tones repetition and frequency modulations. With the proper attention the listener can reach an estatic condition and hear the infinity of sounds within a single sound. This link them to ancient music traditions and to the modern ipnotic performances such as those of The Theatre of Eternal Music of La Monte Young, Steve Reich Vri-il has played various concerts all around Italy, two special concerts, wich actually were two 6 hours celebrations of spring equinox and summer soltice during 2004, were recorded and released on CD by MCL (Musica di un certo livello), an indipendent italian label. Their first album was completed in summer 2004 and released in early 2005 by MCL and Misty Circle, an historical experimental and industrial label based in Rome. http://www.myspace.com/vriil http://www.vriil.it/ Italy request info >> |

ZERO KAMA
musique concrete / performative art / esoteric / actionism / body art / avant-garde / electroacoustic / experimental / contemporary art / folk / ritual dark ambient
PUBLISHED RELEASES__________________________________________ Michael DeWitt Early ritual industrial project of Michael DeWitt (Nekrophile Records). Only "The Secret Eye of L.A.Y.L.A.H." and a few compilation tracks were ever recorded. A planned release of a musical/ritual rendition of The Book Of The Law was planned, but only one track ended up being completed.
